My Life as a Spacecraft: Week 5- Essay Planning

This week I collaborated with those in this study group who study the same course as myself in order to communicate the importance of our subject area in the evolution of Space Technology/ Culture.

After hearing the importance of each subject area in terms of Space Culture, we suggested possible essay titles for each other.

I managed to come up with an essay title which I believe could be good to base my essay on. This title is “How would Space Technology/ Culture be Less Advanced Without the use of Illustration?

Possible references that I will use is Hannah Arendts essay “‘The Conquest of Space and the Stature of Man: Has man’s conquest of space increased or diminished his stature?’“,

Vincent Di Fate, Robert Hurt and Tim Pyle

What I would like to do in my essay:

Shed light on the true importance of illustration in terms of intellectual, design aspects in contrary to the more commonly referred to purpose of illustration, to give visual representation of fictional stories.

Attempt to come up with an argument as to whether or not Space Technology would be less advanced without Illustration, or an argument of whether or not Illustration should be seen as more of a science than that of just an art.

Talk about how Illustration can be done in many forms of art (Music, Art, Performance).

Give respect to particular Illustrators whom have helped the art form be seen as more use than ‘pretty pictures in children’s books’.

“turning invisible light into colors that we can see” (Dillow, 2010)

“Sailors fighting in the dance hall, oh man, look at those cavemen go” (Bowie, 1971)

“An illustration is a decoration, interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process” (, 2018)

” For the scientist, man is no more than an observer of the universe in its manifold manifestations”. (Arendt, 1969)
