After completing a 3 year Illustration degree where I was pushed to the very limit, met with constant judgement/ critique and learnt new ways of creating, you would think that perhaps I wanted a break. Although, this wasn’t the case.
The primary reason I decided to study illustration in university and get a degree was due to my passion for the arts. I love all types of art whether it be music, photography, acting, or painting, and to be able to further my passion for illustration (although there were numerous times where the thought of giving up crept into my mind) was a gift.
I still have a long way to go before I even think about possibly running a side business of selling commissions/ original art, so to get there I still need to practice. But first I am still attempting to find my niche.
Below are some illustrations that I have created over lockdown and the past few months, I believe it’s important that even during days where you feel lower than usual to remember that you have a gift, and you can use said gift to turn those negatives into a positive.
After graduating, I decided that I would like to focus on pushing my skills in digital art, as during my studies digital illustration didn’t seem to be acceptable by lecturers as they wanted to see more traditional work. Therefore although I do also enjoy traditional, I am spending this time to challenge myself further and try and expand my range of skills in illustrating.
I would like to get back into my photography work also, although due to the current state of the pandemic (Wales now going into a 2 week lockdown) I believe it may be a while until I can go out for leisure reasons and photographing sights.
I want this post to reach others who may be in my situation as a graduate who has not yet been able to find their feet in this pandemic, whether that be in prospect of careers or mental health, or even general stability and remind everyone to keep some faith. You never know what could be happening next week. Who knows, tomorrow you could have a call from one of the dream companies you applied for and hear some good news. You have to keep going and keep strong as you never know what is waiting for you around the corner. Keep creating. Keep being true to yourself and work hard, but don’t overwork yourself. These are troubling times for everyone. Keep your head up and know that you’re not alone.
